Velma L. Payne, PhD
Velma L. Payne currently serves as the Center for Biomedical Informatics and Biostatistics Director of Health Data Science Services.
Dr. Payne has a 40+ year career including more than 25 years as a Computer Programmer and Information Technology Manager in the financial industry. After obtaining an MS and PhD in Biomedical Informatics she transitioned to academia serving as Assistant Professor and various management roles including Associate Vice President for Online Learning, Program Director of Health Informatics, Chair of Health Information Systems and Healthcare Administration.
Her research focus is cognitive aspects of clinical decision making, providers’ use of cognitive heuristics and biases, providers’ perception of AI information embedded in EHRs, diagnostic errors, and the use of informatics tools to enhance the patient experience and patient-provider interaction.
