Justin Starren, MD, PhD, FACMI, is a tenured Professor of Medical Imaging and serves as the Director for the Center of Biomedical Informatics and Biostatistics at the University of Arizona Health Sciences.
Dr. Starren is a biomedical informatics researcher and data scientist with more than 30 years of experience. His research career has focused on the challenges that occur at the boundaries between different domains, and on creating new methods that address unmet needs. This has included: the integration of genomic information and electronic health records (EHRs) to enable precision medicine; interfaces between humans and computers; tools to connect medically underserved populations and academic medical centers; and translational informatics bridging research and clinical care.
Dr. Starren is widely known for his work on the Informatics for Diabetes Education and Telemedicine (IDEATel) Project. He served as Co-Principal Investigator and chief technology architect for the Informatics for Diabetes Education and Telemedicine Project (IDEATel). He is also applauded for his work leading the EHR integration workgroup of the Electronic Medical Records and Genomics (eMERGE) project which focused on the integration of genomic data into the EHR to support precision medicine. Dr. Starren led a nine-site consortium integrating patient reported outcomes data into EHRs: EHR Access to Seamless Integration of PROMIS (EASI-PRO). His current research involves exploring the ethical issues involved with technology-enabled research data collection during clinical encounters.
He is an elected fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) and is a Fellow of the American Medical Informatics Association (FAMIA). He has held numerous national leadership positions and is currently Chair of the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Biomedical and Health Informatics Academic Leadership Council, and Chair of the Informatics Maturity Workgroup.
