When
Dr. Payne had a 25 year career in Information Technology in the financial industry prior to transitioning to academia where she most recently served as the Director of Health Informatics and Assistant Professor at Idaho State University. As co-owner of an informatics application development LLC, she developed and implemented applications in clinical practice to enhance obstetrics and gynecological care. Her research focuses on enhancing the patient experience and patient-provider interaction using informatics-based solutions. She has conducted extensive research on providers’ cognitive processes including use of cognitive heuristics and biases. She has also studied patient lived-experiences when seeking a definitive diagnosis for a long-standing medical condition. From this work she developed a ‘MAKE Framework’ depicting what matters to patients and their perception of what the healthcare system can do to ‘MAKE a Difference’ in the patient experience. Future planned research extends this research and involves the use of AI-based informatics tools addressing patient needs to enhance patient care and outcomes.
